The best cameras for a beginner photographer of 2017

Have you decided to take up photography and choose a camera? Here are some tips on how to buy camera for a beginner photographer.

Professional cameras for beginners can be too expensive and difficult to master, and the simplest models will not allow you to seriously improve the skills of photography. Here are a few criteria that a camera should meet for a beginner photographer:

  • Presence of manual settings. It is important that all parameters can be adjusted quickly. Such an opportunity is provided by all modern SLR cameras and mirrorless ones of medium and high price range.
  • Large matrix. It allows you to get sharper, more detailed photos, works better in low light and gives less digital noise. It is desirable that the matrix correspond to the size of the APS-C standard or be full-frame (the film frame size is 24 × 36 mm). All modern SLR cameras and most mirrorless ones are equipped with such matrices.
  • Ability to use interchangeable lenses, additional accessories (system cameras). This allows you to take pictures in any conditions. For example, to shoot portraits with a blurred background or work in low light, the photographer will be able to select a high-speed optics, for shooting much distant objects – a telephoto lens. System cameras include mirror and mirrorless cameras.

Nikon D3400

Nikon D3400 complete with lens AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm 3.5-5.6G VR – one of the most affordable DSLRs on the market. The camera has a simplified, but very convenient control. In the Nikon D3400 there is not only an auto mode, but also a training mode Guide, which will help to master the basic techniques of taking pictures.

As in professional Nikon cameras, the D3400 has an AUTO ISO function with the option of setting the maximum shutter speed. There are a lot of other pleasant little things in the camera that will be useful for a beginner in the future.

CMOS-matrix APS-C standard with a resolution of 24.2 megapixels is responsible for the quality image. There is no low-pass filter, so you can get sharper images. Similar matrixes are used in much more expensive Nikon cameras, so if you have some photography skills, even with this simple camera you can get professional-quality images.

The standard AF-P DX Nikkor 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR lens is suitable for most tasks that a beginner photographer may encounter. A useful bonus is built-in optical stabilization (VR – Vibration Reduction), which protects against image blur due to camera shake in the hands. The new AF-P focus motor will provide fast and quiet autofocusing during video recording.

The auto focus module has 11 points. This is enough for productive work. In Live View mode (when viewing the screen, and not through the viewfinder), the face detection function is available.

The Nikon D3400 is one of the most compact DSLRs on the market. Its dimensions are 124 × 98 × 75.5 mm with a weight of 445 grams (with battery and memory card). A single battery charge is enough to make about 740 frames.

Nikon D3400 records video in the format of Full HD with a frequency of up to 60 frames per second.

CANON EOS 750D

The main feature of the Canon EOS 750D is the touchscreen rotary display.

With this camera it’s much easier to make shots from unusual angles, holding it near the ground or above the head.

Inside the camera you can find some innovations, including a new 24-megapixel CMOS sensor with a low-pass filter. It favorably distinguishes the EOS 750D from the budget EOS 1300D, where the 18 megapixel APS-C matrix of the previous generation is still used.

The new sensor in the EOS 750D works in tandem with the modern DIGIC 6 processor, providing a lower level of digital noise at high ISO values.

The camera also has a 19-point autofocus sensor (against the 9-point sensor of the EOS 700D). The more AF points, the more confident and accurate the focus will be, especially in automatic and tracking modes. However, to select a focus point or to change it, you will have to press a separate button, which will somewhat slow down the process of shooting.

When shooting in Live View mode, the focus is fast and accurate thanks to the support of Hybrid CMOS AF technology of the third generation. Video recording is made with a maximum resolution of Full HD at a frequency of up to 30 frames per second. During video shooting, manual control of the settings is possible.

The Canon EOS 750D weighs 555 grams, and the battery is enough for about 440 shots.

Thanks to Wi-Fi and NFC modules, it is possible to connect the camera with mobile devices.

SONY ALPHA ILCE-6000 KIT

This is the smallest, but perhaps the most advanced camera on our list. Despite the fact that the camera appeared in 2014, today it has not lost its relevance. Unlike the newer and much more advanced ILCE-6300 and ILCE-6500 models, the ILCE-6000 is now in a relatively low-cost price range.

Like all the cameras of our review, Sony Alpha ILCE-6000 is equipped with a CMOS-matrix form factor APS-C with a resolution of 24 megapixels. However, it has a more compact body, where Sony engineers have added many advanced features. Among them – a powerful hybrid focusing system with 179 phase sensors. 4D Focus technology provides not only accurate focusing, but also anticipates the direction of movement of the object, which allows you to always keep it in focus.

There are both automatic and manual modes. The device is equipped with several programmable buttons, to which the user can assign any function, as well as a customizable menu.

You can take pictures with a high-quality electronic viewfinder or a 3-inch display.

The presence of a multi-interface connector allows you to install a powerful external flash, microphone and other accessories on the camera.

A full-HD video recording with a frequency of up to 60 frames per second is available. But if you want to record professional-grade video in 4K resolution, then you should take a closer look at the Sony ILCE-A6300.

The weak point of any mirrorless camera (Sony Alpha ILCE-6000 including) is its less long battery life compared to SLR cameras.

Sony ILCE-A6000 offers rich wireless capabilities. By connecting this camera to the smartphone, you can transfer photos to it and manage the shooting from a distance.

The camera functions are expanded with additional applications. They are available on the official website.
For a beginner photographer many experts recommend buying used camera to practice taking pictures and then choose more advanced models.
